Did you know February is Children’s Dental Health Month? While this designation may not mean much to you right now, it will by the time you are finished reading this article. As dentists encourage and emphasize the importance of preventive care and good oral hygiene habits, you may begin to wonder what you can do to help boost your child’s smile. Keep reading to learn more about this celebratory time and how you can work to improve your little one’s dental habits.

What is Children’s Dental Health Month?

Children’s Dental Health Month is celebrated in February and is a time for dentists to promote good oral hygiene and health among young patients.

First celebrated in 1949, after February 8 was designated Children’s Dental Health Day, it became a month-long celebration more than 30 years later.

It continues to raise awareness about the importance of practicing good oral habits early on to avoid tooth decay, cavities, and other similar oral health conditions. With educational programs available, dentists use the entire month to encourage parents to understand the importance of helping children maintain healthier, longer-lasting smiles.

What Can You Do to Prioritize Your Child’s Oral Health & Hygiene?

Depending on your child’s age, you may be helping them brush and floss their teeth or observing their habits to ensure they’re doing them correctly.

To offer additional support, dentists encourage you to ask questions about ways to combat tooth decay, how to maintain healthy gums in the long run, how to prevent crowded teeth, and ways to familiarize your child with the dentist’s office before their first appointment.

You can also:

  • Make sure they are brushing and flossing correctly so that decay does not build up over time.
  • Buy your child a new toothbrush, one that gets them excited about taking care of their smile.
  • Schedule a dentist’s appointment every six months to ensure their teeth and gums remain healthy, strong, and beautiful year-round.

Children’s Dental Health Month may only be officially recognized throughout the month of February, but your decision to be proactive about caring for your child’s smile is something you can continue to pursue throughout the year.
