It’s almost time for St. Patrick’s Day. Now that March is in full swing, this special holiday will be here before you know it. It is the perfect excuse to get together with your family to enjoy a meal. Implementing some green foods as snacks and sides is a great way to feel festive this time of year. Here are some options that can also benefit your child’s oral health.
Avocados
Do you have breakfast plans for St. Patrick’s Day? This could be a good day to whip together some trendy avocado toast with your kid’s favorite seasons and flavors. Alternatively, a homemade guacamole with chips is a perfect appetizer to precede dinner. With its delicious mild taste and smooth texture, avocados can provide a substantial amount of healthy fatty acids and approximately 20 different vitamins and minerals that your child needs. This includes pantothenic acid, potassium, dietary fiber, and vitamins K, B6, E, and C.
Brussels Sprouts
Similarly to avocados, Brussels sprouts are an excellent source of vitamins C and K. They are also rich with essential B vitamins, including B6 and B1. They also contain proteins, iron, and omega-3 patty acids. They can be prepared in various ways. Whether you want to boil them and top them with salt and pepper, or you prefer them with a sweet glaze, your family can’t go wrong with this green veggie.
Mint
Mint isn’t just a flavor of your favorite ice cream or chewing gum. It is also a delicious garnish that can bring out fresh flavors in beverages, like lemonade. A well-know fact about mint is that its leaves promote digestion and soothes stomachaches. Mint is also a natural stimulant, promoting mental clarity and alertness throughout the day.
Broccoli
You’ve already been encouraging your children to eat plenty of broccoli. This green vegetable is packed with fiber, which helps with the digestive process. It also lowers blood sugar and curbs overeating. Whether you are enjoying the Irish American classic, corned beef and Cabbage, or another meal, consider adding some steamed broccoli as a side dish.
Celery
Have you ever heard of celery being described as “nature’s toothbrush?” Celery is the perfect snack for your teeth and St. Patrick’s Day. Celery contains anti-inflammatory agents, antioxidants, and beneficial nutrients that protect against gingivitis. They contain vitamin K, vitamin C, and folate – all of which promote cell growth, repair, and healing. If your child doesn’t prefer celery on its own, try pairing it with one of their favorite dips, like ranch dressing.
This St. Paddy’s Day, consider some festive snacks, like the foods listed above. This way, you can enjoy the holiday while also keeping your smile in good shape.
