Fortunately, children’s tooth extractions are relatively common, and most kids recover without significant complications. A little extra care at home can go a long way toward keeping your child comfortable and supporting proper healing. Here are six ways to help your little one bounce back after their procedure!

1. Help Them Protect the Extraction Site

After a tooth is removed, a blood clot forms in the empty socket. This clot is an important part of the healing process because it protects the underlying tissue while the area begins to recover.

Encourage your child to avoid touching the extraction site with their fingers or tongue. They should also avoid spitting, vigorous rinsing, and drinking through straws for at least the first 24 hours, or as directed by their dentist. These activities can dislodge the blood clot and interfere with healing.

2. Keep Discomfort Under Control

It’s normal for children to experience some soreness after an extraction, particularly as the local anesthetic wears off. Your dentist may recommend an age-appropriate over-the-counter pain reliever or prescribe medication if necessary.

Follow their instructions carefully, including the recommended dosage and timing. A cold compress applied to the outside of your child’s cheek can also help reduce swelling and provide some relief.

3. Offer Plenty of Soft Foods

Your child may not feel like eating much immediately after their procedure, but staying hydrated and getting enough nutrition are important for recovery.

Stock up on soft, easy-to-eat options that won’t irritate the extraction site. Some kid-friendly choices include:

Applesauce and yogurt

Mashed potatoes

Scrambled eggs

Macaroni and cheese

Smoothies eaten with a spoon rather than a straw

Pudding and gelatin

Avoid crunchy, hard, spicy, or very hot foods while the area heals. Gradually reintroduce your child’s usual favorites as they’re comfortable chewing.

4. Watch Out for Numbness

If your child received local anesthesia, their lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums may remain numb for a few hours after the procedure.

Young children may not understand why their mouth feels different, making them more likely to accidentally bite or chew on their lips, cheeks, or tongue. Keep an eye on your little one until the numbness wears off, and avoid giving them foods that require significant chewing during this time.

5. Encourage Plenty of Rest

Your child might be eager to get back to playing, but taking it easy after an extraction is important. Running, jumping, sports, and other strenuous activities can increase bleeding and interfere with the healing process.

Plan a relaxing afternoon with movies, books, puzzles, or their favorite quiet activities. Most children can gradually return to their normal routines as they feel better, following their dentist’s recommendations.

6. Keep Their Mouth Clean

Good oral hygiene helps prevent infection and supports healthy healing. However, you’ll need to be gentle around the extraction site.

Follow your dentist’s instructions about when to resume brushing and rinsing. Help your child brush their other teeth carefully, avoiding direct irritation of the healing area. If your dentist recommends a saltwater rinse, make sure your child is old enough to rinse and spit safely.

Contact your dentist if your child develops worsening pain, fever, increasing swelling, or bleeding that doesn’t stop with the recommended pressure.

With a little patience and plenty of encouragement, your child can get through recovery comfortably and return to their usual adventures!

About the Practice

Trinity Pediatric Dentistry provides compassionate dental care for infants, children, and teenagers in Fort Worth, Texas.
