Before you know it, your child is running up to you with their tooth in hand, eager for what the Tooth Fairy will bring. It might feel a bit like whiplash with how quickly it all happens, so why not learn about the typical timeline for baby teeth – when they erupt and when they fall out – and how you can protect their growing smile.

What is the Normal Timeline for Tooth Eruption & Tooth Loss?

No two babies are the same, and as a parent, you already know that. Whether this is your first or third, each child grows and experiences things uniquely. Tooth eruption and loss are no different. However, saying hello and goodbye to baby teeth is normal. It’s learning when it all happens that parents want to know.

The typical timeline for baby tooth eruption and loss looks like:

Teething: 6-12 months (It can start as early as 3-4 months)

First Tooth: It is usually a bottom front one that can erupt between 6-10 months. The second usually follows soon after, though sometimes it comes with the upper front teeth at 8-12 months.

Full Set of Baby Teeth: 3 years is when your child should have all 20 of their baby teeth.

First Lost Tooth: This usually occurs around the age of 6 but can happen sooner or later.

By age 12 or 13, your child’s primary teeth will be gone and replaced by permanent ones.

How Can You Care for Baby Teeth During This Time?

Baby teeth are known as placeholders that set the stage for adult chompers. Their health matters, which is why dentists urge parents like you to take proper care of them. One important rule of thumb: as soon as your child’s first tooth erupts, schedule a dental appointment. Building a healthy relationship with their pediatric dentist and establishing good oral habits early supports better oral health in the future.

You’ll learn how to care for baby teeth (use a smear of fluoride toothpaste and a finger brush or soft-bristled toothbrush) and gums (wipe with a clean, damp cloth).

Keeping them healthy and in place until it’s time for them to fall out can make adult tooth eruption easier and free of complications (misalignment, decay, etc.).

It’s a big deal to see baby teeth come and go, but remember: this normal process puts your child one step closer to a smile that can last a lifetime. If you have questions about the process, ask their pediatric dentist for more information.

About the Author

Dr. Meghan Thorburn is a board-certified pediatric dentist with more than a decade of experience.
